What Is Hide & Seek Online? The Free Geography Hide-and-Seek Game, Explained
Hide & Seek Online is a free online geography game where you hide somewhere real and your friends try to find you. Every hiding spot is a real place on Google Street View. Seekers look around, walk down the street, read the signs, and drop a pin on a world map. The closer the pin, the more points they score.
It takes the idea behind Street View guessing games and turns it into a party game: the locations come from the people you play with, so every round becomes a little story (“you hid where?”).
How a match works
A match is made of rounds. Each round has two phases, and roles rotate so that everyone hides once per round.
- Hide. All players choose a hiding spot at the same time. You can browse suggested spots, or, in Mixed rooms, pick any point on the world map and preview the nearest Street View. When you are happy, you press Choose This Spot and it is locked.
- Seek. One player’s spot opens for everyone else. That player is the hider for the turn. The others explore and place a guess on the map, then press Submit guess. Then the next player’s spot opens, until everyone has been found.
- Results. After each turn you see every guess on the map with distances and points. At the end, the final standings show the winner, and a game summary lets you revisit any round and hider.
The game server keeps the time and calculates every score, and no player sees the real location before their own guess is locked in or the turn closes. That keeps the game fair even when friends are playing in the same room.
Modes
| Mode | Players | Rounds | Time to hide | Time to seek |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Quick Play | 2–4 online players | 1 | 45 seconds | 30 seconds |
| Private room | 2–4 friends with an invite link | 1–4 (default 2) | 45, 90 or 150 seconds | 30, 60 or 120 seconds |
| Solo | 1 | 5 locations | — | 90 seconds each |
- Quick Play matches you with other people who are looking for a game right now. The match starts automatically eight seconds after a second player joins.
- Private rooms are for friends. You get a room code and an invite link, and the host chooses the number of rounds, the pace and the location type.
- Solo is a five-location challenge with a maximum of 2,500 points, good for practising or a quick break.
Exploring: what you can actually do
Outside locations use Google’s own Street View imagery, so you can drag to look around and click the arrows on the road to walk. A Back to start button always returns you to the exact place you started. Inside locations are single 360° photos: you can look around them but not walk.
Room hosts choose between three location types:
- Outside — streets in cities around the world, all walkable.
- Inside — interiors from 360° photos.
- Mixed — both, plus the freedom to hide anywhere on the map that has Street View nearby.
How scoring works
Each guess earns round(500 × e^(−distance ÷ 2,500 km)) points. That means a perfect guess is worth 500 points, and points fall off smoothly with distance:
| Distance from the hiding spot | Points |
|---|---|
| 0 km | 500 |
| 100 km | 480 |
| 500 km | 409 |
| 1,000 km | 335 |
| 2,500 km | 184 |
| 5,000 km | 68 |
If time runs out, your last placed pin still counts. With no pin, you score zero. The hider does not score on their own turn, and players with equal totals share the same rank.
What makes it different from other geography games
Most Street View games pick random locations for you. In Hide & Seek Online, your friends are the level designers. That changes the feel of the game:
- Hiding becomes strategy. Do you pick a famous square, or a quiet side street that looks like a hundred others?
- It is social. You can hide at the street where you grew up, a place you visited together, or the city you want to travel to next.
- Everyone plays both roles. You are never only guessing, and you get to watch your friends search for you.
It also keeps the friction low: it runs in a browser, has no account system, and the invite link is the only thing you need to share.
Who it’s for
- Friends on a call who want something more interesting than another trivia quiz. See our list of free games to play on a video call.
- Couples, including long-distance ones, looking for an easy online date night.
- Geography fans looking for a free GeoGuessr alternative to play with friends.
- Teachers and families who want a playful way to talk about countries, languages and landscapes.
It is less suited to very large groups: online matches are capped at four players.
Playing on a phone
On narrow screens, the street and the guess map become two views of the same game. Show Map opens the map and Show Street View takes you back, and your pin, the map position and the timer stay where they were. You can also rotate your phone at any time.
Optional voice chat
Rooms include optional voice chat. It is off until you press Join voice, and your browser asks for microphone permission only at that point. Audio goes directly between players and is never recorded, and you can mute yourself, turn sound off, or mute one player for yourself.
Fair play
Because the answer is a real place, it is technically possible to cheat by searching in another tab. The game is designed so that nobody sees the answer early, but the fun depends on players exploring honestly, so we ask everyone to keep other maps closed.
